Shirley Toya Yokom

Shirley Toya Yokom

, a long-time resident of the Queen Creek area, died suddenly on Tuesday morning, February 19, 2019, at Mercy Gilbert Hospital, in Gilbert, Arizona.

Shirley was born in 1931. She was the second child of four children, born to Shirley and Felix Vivas of Pasadena, California.

Shirley enjoyed dancing, mischief making, and always had a good story to tell. She had a great sense of humor, an infectious laugher, and never took herself too serious.

In a wind whirl romance, she met and fell in love with Bill Yokom, of Dubuque, Iowa. She and Bill were married on June 23, 1950. During their union, they were blessed with seven wonderful children. Shirley dearly loved being a wife, mother, and homemaker, but also enjoyed politics, and was very civic minded. In fact, it was during that time as a homemaker, that she served as the secretary to the Women’s Republican Party of California for many years.

As her children grew up, she continued volunteering for her political party, became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and worked as a paralegal. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in her spare time, she enjoyed being with those she loved. She enjoyed, both playing and watching tennis throughout her life. Shirley was very generous, and is best known for making and giving away hand beaded jewelry, which many people will have to cherish long after her passing.

She is preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) Yokom; her parents, Felix and Shirley J. Vivas; and her brother, Felix Vivas. Shirley is survived in death by her 7 children, Linda Best; Gayland (Gay) Clayton; Georgia Yokom; Ronald (Ron) Yokom; Roberta (Birdie) Speirs; Russell (Russ) Yokom; Lewis (Lew) Yokom; her brother, Stanley (Stan) Vivas; her sister Susan (Sue) Flanagon; along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The visitation will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 10:00 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 26023 South Lemon Avenue, in Queen Creek, AZ.

Immediately following, the funeral services will be held at the same location at 11:00 a.m.
