Rudolph Joseph (“Rudy”) Serrano

, 84, passed away November 25, 2016. Rudy lived an extraordinary life, blessed with a loving wife, children and grandchildren, who adored him.

Rudy was born February 2, 1932 in Mesa, AZ to Chandler pioneers Albert P. and Dolores Serrano. Educated in the Chandler school system, Rudy attended Cleveland Elementary School and Chandler High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. In 1946 while at CHS, Rudy met his future wife, the former Colleen Alberts. Rudy’s proudest accomplishment at CHS was being a part of the 1949 state football champions, the only CHS state championship football team until 2014. Rudy was fortunate to see his grandson Zane Serrano play on the 2014 CHS championship team. In 1950, Rudy began studying at Arizona State College (now ASU) and serving in the ROTC. Upon graduating, he married Colleen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chandler, September 6, 1954. From 1954 to 1956 Rudy served his country as a Field Artillery Commander at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and later in the Arizona National Guard. After completing his full-time military  service in 1956, Rudy and Colleen returned to Chandler, where Rudy joined the family business, Serrano’s Department Stores. For the next 25 years Rudy,  and his brother Ernie, worked side by side to build a successful retail business. In 1979, Rudy joined Central Real Estate in Chandler as a commercial and residential realtor with his partners: Gene Hickey, Jim Cullumber and Mike Hickey. He retired from Central Real Estate in 2009. Rudy was active in the Downtown Chandler Merchant’s Association, Rotary International and the Knights of Columbus. Rudy’s later years were spent golfing at White Mountain Country Club in Pinetop. Rudy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Colleen, and his eight children; Margaret Serrano-Foster (Bruce Robinson), Joe Serrano, Susan Serrano (Cliff Jones), John Serrano (Heidi), Kevin Serrano (Sonia), Mary Ann Rezzonico (Calvin), Steven Serrano (Steve Schopf) and Cookie Serrano(Jane Hill). Rudy is also survived by 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Rudy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 3:00 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 230 West Galveston, Chandler. Interment to follow at Valley of the Sun Cemetery, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler. A rosary will be held for Rudy on Monday, November 28th at 8:00 pm at Bueler Mortuary 14 W. Hulet Drive, Chandler.
