Wendy Lorraine Johnson, 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 18, 2025. She was a devoted mother, beloved educator, and a woman of creativity and strength.
Born in New York to Charles and Addie Tate, Wendy was the eldest of three and the only girl. As a young woman in the city, she loved fashion and enjoyed designing and making her own clothes. She attended Marymount Manhattan College before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, where she married and started a family. During this time, she also earned her Master’s in Education, setting the foundation for a lifelong career as a dedicated teacher.
After divorcing, Wendy poured her love and energy into raising her daughter while tirelessly shaping the lives of her elementary students. Her creativity shone through in her teaching, especially in the beautifully decorated bulletin boards in her classroom. Wendy had a love for traveling, working, and keeping a tidy home, always bringing warmth and vibrancy into every space she touched.
In 2017, Wendy welcomed her grandson, Ace, into the world—a moment that brought her immeasurable joy. Having a baby in the house again filled her heart with love and purpose.
She is survived by her daughter, Ayanna; brother, Gary Tate; niece, Zuri Tate; great-niece, Miya; grandson, Ace; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Wendy was a force and a light, known for her warm smile, loving embrace, and fun-loving personality. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
