Thomas (Tom) Macari, Sr.
September 12, 1934 – May 3, 2016
Tom (aka ‘Tim’ when he was growing up), was born to Valerio (Larry) & Margaret (Mildred) Macari on September 12, 1934, in Brooklyn NY, the third of five children. He joined the US Army at age 17, served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict, and married the love of his life Frieda Bonanno on October 23, 1954. Able to fix almost anything, Tom completed his education on the GI Bill and worked in the automotive industry his entire life. He had an incredible ear and could diagnosis almost any problem by listening closely to the vehicle and its owner. He worked first as a mechanic, then as a service writer and director, coming full circle selling new cars and finally in the automotive extended warranty area after he moved to Arizona in 1986. He enjoyed living in Arizona and was so happy he finally made a move west.
Tom was a kind, compassionate, generous man who would share his last dime or meal with you. He could be seen doodling on paper, was always optimistic with his ‘scratchers’ and loved to bowl even achieving a perfect 300 game. He was a dog-lover, pre-deceased by Lady & Bandit, but he loved his ‘grand-puppies’ as his own. A lung cancer survivor (almost 6 years), he died peacefully, surrounded by family on May 3, 2016 after a valiant fight with pulmonary fibrosis. He was pre-deceased by his parents, two older brothers (Duke and Tony) and younger brother Val Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Frieda, daughter Maggie (John Hinson), son Tom Jr (Pattie), grandchildren Krysti (Geoff Roush), Kelsey Hinson, Kevin Macari and Laurel Hinson, sister Ann Theresa, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In accordance with Tom’s wishes, there will be a funeral mass held on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3450 W. Ray Road, Chandler. A reception will immediate follow the mass. If you would like, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
