, 74, resident of Maricopa, AZ passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2021. He was the son of Stella Thompson Ragland and Julian Potter Ragland of Nashville TN. Sam’s maternal grandmother, Mrs. T.C. (“Toots”) Thompson Jr. was a beloved resident of Chattanooga TN; and his paternal grandmother, Julia Potter Ragland was a cherished member of the Murfreesboro, TN community.
Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Lynn Oppelt on December 31, 2002, and daughter, Sherry Ragland Robinson on October 5, 2020.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, and her son James, son, David, and sister, Julie Ragland Poston of Snohomish, WA; as well as his brother-in-law, Tom Oppelt, and wife Debbie. Surviving grandchildren are Evan and Patrick Robinson of GA, and Kyler and Mia Ragland of Avondale, AZ. Surviving niece and nephews: Kim Oppelt of Phoenix, AZ, Crosby Poston (Marlo) of North Las Vegas, NV, Travis Poston (Nancy) of 29 Palms, CA, Ford Poston (Jennifer) of LK Stevens, WA, Ian Poston (Angie) of Culver City, CA, and Blake Poston of San Diego, CA.
Sam’s formative years were spent in Nashville, TN where he attended Parmer School and Montgomery Bell Academy. Within his last five years in Tennessee, he moved with his family to Riverbend Farm in Franklin. In 1960, his family relocated to the great Southwest, settling in Phoenix where he graduated from Arcadia High School and later attended ASU where he received an Industrial Engineering Degree. In due course, he earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix.
Sam has worked for large companies such as 1st Interstate Bank, Honeywell, Allied Signal Engines, and Lockheed, as well as being an entrepreneur and small business owner of Merry Moppets Daycare.
Sam is fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving husband, a devoted father, a doting grandfather, and a faithful friend who never stopped telling the worst “Dad” jokes and puns that never ceased to bring smiles to those around him.
