Ruth E. Sloan passed peacefully on May 22, 2024, at the age of 98. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 24, 1925, to Fire Chief Karl and Lillian (Mominee) Scheidler. The youngest of three daughters, Ruth was her dad’s “buddy” accompanying him on fishing and hunting ventures. While attending Woodward High School, she served as Junior and Senior Class Secretary, was a member of the yearbook staff, choir and Zetalethean Literary Society. Ruth met the love of her life, Edward K. Sloan Jr., in her plane geometry class. After graduation, she continued her education earning an associates degree from Davis Business College in Toledo.
Ruth’s career started as an administrative assistant for Owen’s Corning Fiberglass in Toledo, transferring to an executive secretary position for Standard Oil in Cleveland, Ohio. After raising her children, she was employed by John Wanamakers in Wilmington, Delaware and Richardson School District in Dallas, Texas. She retired in 1990 and moved with Ed to Sun Lakes, Arizona.
Her greatest joy was her family. Ruth was active in Girl Scouts, taught Sunday school, served as home room mother and on the PTA Board. She was our biggest fan attending sport activities, choir concerts, dance recitals and plays of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth loved to travel, especially with her grandchildren on the summer trips in the minivan. She made a loving, welcoming home where she hosted family Easter egg hunts, Christmas cookie decorating gatherings, etc., as well as neighborhood parties. Her lifelong commitment to community service began during World War II sending newsletters to servicemen and as a volunteer registrar for sugar and meat stamps. Ruth was an avid reader who loved music and needlepoint. She enjoyed friendly competitions of tennis, bridge and bowling with her neighbors.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Edward K. Sloan Jr.; her parents; sisters Ethel and Helen; brother-in-laws; sister-in-law; daughter-in-law Peggy; nieces Cheryl and Margi and nephew James Jr.
She is survived by her son, David; her daughter, Carol (Michael); her grandchildren, Eric (Vickie), Landon (Jennifer), Heather (Brian) and Lindsay (Alex); great grandchildren, Kayla, Taylor, Logan, Mark, Marley, Gisele, Preston and Emilie.
