Pete A. Hernandez, 76, of Chandler, Arizona passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 12, 2024. He was born in Mesa, Arizona, on May 5, 1948, to Pete and Mary (Acuna) Hernandez.
An Arizona native, Pete was a three sport standout athlete at Chandler High playing Football, Basketball and Baseball. In 1969 after attending Phoenix College on an athletic scholarship he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and the U.S. Army, with the Army winning out. Pete received numerous community honors, including his induction into the City of Chandler Sports Hall of Fame. He is still recognized for holding school records in football at Chandler High. He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star medal for his heroism in the Vietnam War. Pete was an AIA referee for close to 30 years and worked in masonry for over 20 years. After retiring he enjoyed attending various sporting events to watch, and support, his four grandchildren. Pete also enjoyed dancing, playing Bingo and cheering on his beloved Cowboys.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Ricky. He is survived by his three daughters, Trisha (Keith) Stall, Sherri (Sam) Torres, and Staci Hernandez. Grandchildren Klay Stall, Tatum (Levi) Williams, Dustin Torres and Cason Torres, with a great-grandson on the way; along with his five sisters Mary Mendoza, Maggie Gomez, Aurelia Munoz, Mollie Camacho, Barbara Leon and brother Mike Hernandez. As well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday January 10, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, located at 230 W Galveston Street, Chandler, Arizona 85225 followed by a burial at Valley of the Sun Cemetery, located at 10940 E Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, Arizona 85248.
