Maria Dolores (Loli) Lucas

Maria Dolores (Loli) Lucas

, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2020 at the age of 83.  She was a loving, caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.   We are comforted knowing she is reunited with the love of her life and devoted husband of 57 years, Eliseo Lucas, who passed away on June 23, 2018.

Maria was born in Acevedo del Rio, Celanova, Orense Spain on November 19, 1936 to Jaime and Pilar Gonzalez, who preceded her in death.  She was the oldest of three siblings and shared the same birthday with her mother.  Their humble home was full of love and faith especially while her father fought in the Spanish Civil War.   From a young age she learned how to be self-sufficient and learned many skills and crafts at home. Their family lived most of her childhood in Madrid, Spain, where her father was a musician.  She graduated from Cardenal Cisneros University in Madrid with a teaching degree in Home Economics.

In 1960, she came to visit her younger sister, Pilar, in Flagstaff, AZ where she met Eliseo and they were married on November 24, 1960.   Eliseo worked for Paradise Sheep & Cattle Company so they lived near Williams, AZ during the summer months and Chandler, AZ the remainder of the year.

While she always loved her native Spain and celebrated the culture and traditions with family and friends, Maria became a US citizen in August, 1969 and was very proud to be an American.  She worked hard to learn English in order to help her family and her children.  She was an amazing cook and could just as easily prepare meals for two people or up to hundreds without missing a  beat.  She didn’t write down recipes because she perfected many dishes but she was always happy to share and demonstrate how she made her signature dishes.   Maria was also a gifted seamstress making her own patterns from newspaper and she made anything from Barbie clothes for her daughter’s dolls, prom and graduation dresses, bridesmaid dresses, curtains, bedspreads.   She loved all kinds of crafts, especially needlepoint and floral arranging.  Her most prized needlepoint piece is of the Last Supper which took several years to complete.  Family and friends fill their homes with floral arrangements and holiday decor which Maria created and gave as gifts.

Maria set a tremendous example of dedication and work ethic to her children and grandchildren.  In 2018, she retired from Chandler School District Food Service at the age of 81.  She often said she needed to keep active and moving and she enjoyed working.

Maria set an extraordinary example of service and giving to the community.   She was always involved in fundraisers and charitable events at Basha Elementary School and Seton Catholic High School where her children attended school.   She never turned down anyone who needed help as she was a trusted mentor, confidant, cheerleader and positive influence.  Most recently she volunteered at St Vincent de Paul.   St. Mary’s Catholic Church was her community of faith for over 50 years and she served as a Eucharistic Minister.   Until recently she attended daily Mass;  she never wavered in her faith and she knew God would never give her a cross too heavy to bear.   We are comforted knowing she is in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.

She is survived by her two children, Marisol Cavazos and Eliseo Tony (Griselda) Lucas, four grandchildren, Alina and Cid Lucas and Miranda and Marco Cavazos, two siblings Jaime Gonzalez II, Pilar (Adolfo) Pardo and many nieces and nephews.  We will miss her love and nurturing but she will forever be in our hearts.

Services will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church located at 230 W Galveston St, Chandler AZ 85225 on Monday, July 20 as follows:  10:30 am Rosary and 11:00 am Mass.   Please be advised of COVID restrictions including minimum capacity in the Church, face mask required, temperature checks upon entry and social distancing.  We understand if you are unable to attend services and appreciate your prayers.
