John Martin Willis

November 22, 1949 — June 7, 2024

John Martin Willis, born November 22, 1949, in Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 74 years old.

John, the cherished son of Roy and Lora Willis, spent his formative years in Queen Creek, AZ, before the family relocated to Chandler, AZ. His exceptional intellect shone through as he embarked on his academic journey at Arizona State University at the tender age of 15. By 18, he had already earned his bachelor’s degree.

His academic journey continued as he achieved a PhD in Sociology from Purdue University and a Law Degree from Valparaiso University in Indiana.

John served his country honorably as a weather consultant in the US Army during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge after two years of service.

His professional career was marked by his dedication to legal service. John worked for Legal Services in Lafayette, IN, Bisbee, AZ and the Ohio Court Systems. He served as a juvenile public defender in Ohio and was a legal researcher for judges in both Arizona and Ohio.

John was a loving, kind, and caring son, husband, father, brother, and uncle. He was married to LuAnn Beavers and is survived by their two sons, Martin and Grant Willis. He is also survived by his siblings, Carol Willis Farrell, Wayne Willis (Amy), David Willis (Juli), and Nan Remington (Brad).

John’s love for his family was evident in his thoughtful gestures, such as never forgetting a birthday and encouraging his sons, nieces, and nephews to explore the world and develop a love for reading. John’s profound interest in history, genealogy, and LDS Church history were some of his many gifts.

John’s legacy of kindness, dedication to family and community, and intellect will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by many.
