Jean Celestine Scheufler (Hager)

, 96, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, died peacefully on January 13, 2023, at Inspirations of Tempe in Tempe, Arizona. In 1961, she and her husband, Charles Scheufler, moved from their farm in Belpre, Kansas, to Chandler, Arizona. Jean earned her bachelor’s degree at Fort Hays State College in Kansas and her master’s degree at Arizona State University. She taught primary grades in Kansas for six years and in the Chandler Unified School District for more than 30 years. She was honored as Chandler’s Teacher of the Year in 1985 and spent several years teaching in the Chandler Heights Community one-room schoolhouse.  She also regularly volunteered for education organizations and enjoyed square dancing, playing card games, traveling around the country with her husband in their RV, and spending time with family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Velma and Archie Hager; her husband, Charles; and her son, Archie Scheufler. She leaves behind daughters Pam Woolf (Mike) and Debra Silvey (Gary), 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter due this spring. Services will occur at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2023 at DaySpring United Methodist Church, 1365 E. Elliot Rd., Tempe, AZ 85284. Reception to follow.
