Edwin George "Moon" Mullin passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024. He was born on September 21, 1947, in Oakland, California, at the Naval Hospital Oak Knoll to Bessie and Royal Mullin. Edwin graduated from Tennyson High School in Hayward, California, in 1965, and at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
During his time in the Navy, Edwin proudly served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic Hydraulics (AMH) and an aircrewman (AC), completing three tours in Vietnam before transitioning to the Naval Reserves. He ultimately retired in 1987 with more than 23 years of service to his country. Edwin attended Chabot College before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Flight Operations from San Jose State University in 1971, where he was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He later received a Master’s degree in National Security from the Naval War College in 1993.
In 1970, while attending San Jose State University, Edwin met the love of his life, Jane Murphy. The two were married and shared over 52 wonderful years together. Edwin worked for United Airlines from 1974 to 1981 before joining the engineering department at the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) in Alameda, where he contributed to work on A-3 Skywarriors and S-3 Vikings. In 1995, he transferred to the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) in North Island, San Diego, where he focused on S-3 Vikings and F/A-18 Hornet engineering. After 43 years of dedicated service to Naval Aviation, Edwin retired in 2007.
Edwin was an avid outdoorsman and a dedicated family man. He served as an Assistant Boy Scout Master, where he not only shared his love of the outdoors with his sons but also completed the prestigious Wood Badge leadership training. He loved taking his sons camping, hunting, and fishing—creating cherished memories for his family. Edwin was also an NRA Certified Instructor, passing on his passion and knowledge of firearm safety and marksmanship to others.
One of Edwin’s greatest personal joys was riding his BMW motorcycle. Over the years, he logged more than 200,000 miles, exploring new places and enjoying the freedom of the open road.
He was preceded in death by his father, ADRC Royal John Mullin Jr.; his mother, Bessie Helena Mullin; his sister, Loretta Irene Mullin; and his brother, Royal John Mullin III.
Edwin is survived by his beloved wife, Jane Loran Mullin; his sons, Jack John Paul Mullin and wife Crickett Nicole Weaver, Jeffrey Lee Mullin and wife Rachel, and Scott Kendal Mullin and fiancée Angela Garrotto. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughters, Claire Marie and Amelia Selene Mullin.
