Donald Hill Powell

November 19, 1944 — September 13, 2024

Donald Hill Powell, known to many as Don, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on November 19, 1944, in Alabama, Don was preceded in death by his parents, Pauline and Earnest Powell; his beloved sisters, Evanda Alexander, Rita Smith and Marianne Collins; and most recently by his niece, Darlene Collins.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Loretta Powell, and their four daughters: Jennifer Powell, Jaini Phelps, Dawn Powell, and Pauline Hernandez. Don was a proud grandfather to Jonathan Manwaring, Naya Powell, Lane Dienlin, Melanie Dienlin, and Tyler Newsome. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

At the age of seventeen, Don embarked on a life of service when he joined the United States Marine Corps. Over a distinguished 21-year career, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring from military life. Don then continued his dedication to public service, working with the Bureau of Land Management and other federal agencies for several years.

In the early 1990s, Don and Loretta fulfilled a shared dream when they moved to Socorro, New Mexico, where they built a life filled with warmth and community. Don became well known for his sense of humor, kindness, and the good nature he shared with everyone he met.

He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Don’s legacy of love, laughter, and service will live on in the hearts of his family and community.
