Barbara Jean Wellnitz – Lindstrom
, age 60, died on November 15th 2017 in Phoenix Arizona, ending her courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on June 18th, 1957 in Rochelle Illinois, to parents Albert and Secelia Wellnitz. Barb was a wife, mother and school teacher. She and her husband Ed, met in a Church Singles group, and it really was a match made in heaven. Barb raised two wonderful children, Scott & Erica, and was an important influence in her stepson Zane’s life. She worked as a sign language interpreter and 2nd through 4th grade teacher for 27 years in the Mesa Arizona School District. Even once she was retired, she continued to tutor close friend’s children. Barb was also deeply involved in the childhoods of her nieces and nephews, as the teacher and nurturer was engrained in her personality. She was very excited about the birth of her first grandchild Lex in December 2015. Lex brought lots of joy to the house when Barb needed it most.
You can’t talk about Barb without mentioning her faith. She had an incredibly strong Christian faith. Barb looked to and talked with God every day of her cancer battle. She was more concerned about how those around her were doing than herself. Barb spoke a lot of ‘truths’ during the final months. She knew exactly what people needed to hear. Barb saw absolutely that she was going to heaven. She was involved in multiple Christian congregations and she loved to spend time helping others. At different times in her life, Barb was part of the Singles, Blended Family, Women’s Bible Study, Divorce Care for Kids, Mexicali and Rocky Point Mission trip groups. And, for a number of years, she signed the sermons and worship songs for the deaf that attended Church. If you take anything from Barb’s life, it’s get involved, make a difference, love people, and know where you are going when you die.
Barb was loved by her family and friends. She made sure to stay in touch with all extended family members. Barb had a way of striking up instant friendships with complete strangers. She would be in a grocery store, a restaurant, or just walking down the street, and five minutes after meeting someone, would say afterwards “that’s my new best friend”. Barb made friends wherever she went, including the doctors and nurses who participated in her brave battle with cancer. She was a good listener and counselor. Barb was someone you could count on to be there for you and always ready with a listening ear. It’s like when you take a picture of a beautiful scene, but the picture never looks as good as what you see with the naked eye. It’s impossible to share what an incredible woman Barb was and how she lived her life in words.
Barb is survived by her husband Ed Lindstrom, son Scott Fike (wife Daphne), daughter Erica Felker (husband Sam), stepson Zane Lindstrom, mother Secelia Wellnitz, brother John Wellnitz, sister Mary Owen, brother David Wellnitz, and sister Jeanne Hodgeman.
