Long-time Chandler resident, Barbara Anne Caine Bogle, passed away on March 16, 2017 at the age of 94.
Barbara Caine was born in Ames, Iowa on January 22, 1923 to Anna (Taylor) and Alfred Ballif Caine. She grew up in this small town and attended elementary school and graduated from Ames High.
Barbara met her future husband Jackson Bogle, at Iowa State, where Barbara’s father was a faculty member in the College of Agriculture and Jack was a student in several of Professor Caine’s Animal Husbandry courses.
World War II interrupted the college path for both Barbara and Jack and he was commissioned as a 1
st
Lieutenant in the Army.
The couple married on September 22, 1942.
The newlyweds were stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and Camp Hale in Colorado, where Jack trained in the Field Artillery.
He was deployed to the China-Burma-India Combat Theatre and Barbara and Jack’s first son, John Robert, was born in 1944, 3 months after Jack’s departure.
Jack returned from combat in 1945.
Barbara and Jack moved to Chandler in 1946, to oversee the Bogle family farming, milling and ranching operations.
Much of their farm land was purchased from Dr. A.J. Chandler, himself. A main portion of their farmland is now the community of Ocotillo.
In 1946, Chandler was a town of 3500 people and Barbara relished a town where “everyone knew practically everyone else”. Jack and Barbara bought lots from the Basha Family on which they built their home and lived there for 42 years.
It was there that they raised their 5 children: John Robert (Bob), Kathleen, Becky, Ann and Jackson (JC).
Barbara quickly became involved in many of the activities and clubs in Chandler.
She joined the Chandler Service Club in 1946 and served as President from 1960-61. She was a Charter Member (1954) of Chapter AF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood (a Philanthropic Educational Organization) and served as its President in 1964-66 and also in 1995-97. Barbara’s interests were many and diverse: she helped with Girl Scout Summer Programs; served on the Cleveland School PTA Board; was a “Meals on Wheels” volunteer; was on the Chandler Hospital Board from 1961-64 and was on the Tri-City Mental Health Board from 1971-75. She was involved in preserving the history of her adopted home town and was a member of the Chandler Historical Society, serving as President from 1990-91. She was granted Emeritus Board status in 2005.
Barbara’s church and Christian faith were also an important part of her life. She attended the 1
st
Presbyterian Church of Chandler for many years, where she served as a Deacon; was a founding member of Trinity Community Church and was active in Bethany Community Church in her later years. Barbara had resided at the Village of Ocotillo for the past 12 years and was the guiding hand in beginning a non-Denominational church service there for the residents.
Barbara and Jack were “behind-the-scenes” philanthropists.
They were instrumental in the construction of The Chandler Center for the Arts and the little theater is known as the Hal Green Bogle Theater.
At Chandler Regional Hospital Barbara sponsored 5 “Voyage of Discovery” Seminars on Breast Cancer Education in memory of her daughter Kathleen Bogle Joyner.
Barbara was also honored with the “Spirit of Philanthropy Award” in 2007 for her contribution toward the Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit at Chandler Regional Hospital.
Bogle Junior High School was named in Barbara and Jack’s honor in 1991 and the library at the Bethany Christian School was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Bogle.
Barbara was generous in opening her home to many community events and fundraisers for the Chandler Hospital and Chandler Historical Society. There were end-of-school swim parties, Young Life Meetings, Sunday school potlucks, National Guard Cookouts, Service Club gatherings, grandkid’s birthdays and graduation celebrations.
Barbara’s passions were gardening, flowers and playing bridge.
The latter she played into her 90’s. Thursday afternoon was “Bridge Day” and no outside activities were ever allowed to be scheduled on Thursday afternoons.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jackson; her daughter Kathleen Bogle Joyner (Keith); her son, Bob (Betty); her brother Richard Caine (Betty) and her grandson, Robert L. Bogle. She is survived by her brother, Alfred Caine (Jean), daughter, Becky Ashworth (Ray), Ann Bogle, and her son JC (Kathy); 23 Grandchildren and numerous Great Grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as “GiGi”. She also has many well-loved nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Barbara will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Chandler Center for the Arts (250 N. Arizona Ave, Chandler). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Bogle Family Scholarship (Chandler Education Foundation – 1525 W. Frye Rd., Chandler 85224) or the Chandler Historical Society (P.O. Box 926, Chandler, 85244).
