Harold (Hal) Preston Hostetler
, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 10, 2017, following a month-long battle with pneumonia. He left holding hands with his wife and daughters who cherished him just as he’d cherished them. Above all, Hal loved his savior, Jesus Christ, and he lavished that tender and Christ-like love on his family and friends, and to all he met. Those who have spent any time with Hal remember him for his gentle love, his acceptance and smile, his passion for prayer, an eagerness always to lend a hand, and that quiet confidence that flowed from the time he spent each day with his Heavenly Father.
Hal was born in 1933 in a tiny Pennsylvania town in the midst of the Great Depression. Despite the lack of opportunities of that era, Hal was a hard worker, with the vision and determination to rise out of his poor and simple upbringing. He joined the Navy for four years, then later attended the University of Pittsburgh while working full time, with the goal of becoming a writer. It was during his time at Pitt that Hal met Carol, the girl he adored listening to and the love of his life, and the two of them soon moved to Hawaii and started a family.
Early in his career Hal worked as a journalist for publications such as the Saturday Evening Post and the Honolulu Advertiser. Once he encountered the loving embrace of Jesus, however, he spent the rest of his working years at a variety of Christian missionary organizations and publications, including Brother Andrew. Hal retired as Managing Editor of Guideposts magazine in 1998, and focused his remaining years on his family, his blog and other personal writing, as well as ministries in the church.
Hal leaves behind Carol, his soulmate and wife of 55 years, his daughters Laurel and Kristal, and his three grandchildren, Kaila, Konner and Brennig.
The service celebrating Hal’s life will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11:00a.m. (MST) at Living Faith Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that monetary donations be made to the church family Hal loved so much: Living Faith Anglican Church, 1945 E. Guadalupe Road, Tempe AZ 85283.
