Loving Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, beloved aunt to many, and an inspiration to all who met her.
She sure wanted to make her 100th birthday this year!
The Lord had other plans for her.
She was born September 2, 1922, in Elkhart, Indiana, to Paul &
Carol Waterman, the oldest of 5 children. Verneal lived most of her life in Indiana, specifically the Indianapolis area, where she graduated from Arsenal Technical School in 1941. She married her late husband, Harry Herron, on Easter Sunday1942. Their married lives took them to many new places over their 77 years together, where they met life-long friends, but…Indianapolis was always “
home
”.
Verneal was a tenacious and spirited lady. She worked outside the home from the beginning of her marriage – something that was not common during that era – she was determined to make her own way in life! Proud and stoic, she was loved by many. She spent years writing her “life memories” – the front cover writes “Nothing is a waste that makes a memory.”
That is the epitome of Norma Verneal Herron. She lived a beautiful 99 “memorable” years and didn’t give up until the peaceful end.
She was an excellent seamstress, loved crocheting, enjoyed reading, and BOY was she a ferocious, competitive, game player, especially when she played Gin Rummy! She was always up for a “game” or two, or twenty – playing until she won!!
She is survived by her daughter, Lynnette Lewis of Phoenix, her daughter, Darla Gerner, and her husband, Ed of Boerne, Texas, her youngest brother, Larry Waterman of Shelbyville, Indiana, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces & nephews, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, with a 7
th
one due in November.
A small family celebration of life with burial with her late husband, Harry W. Herron, at the National Memorial VA Cemetery Of Arizona in Phoenix, will be Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 9:30 a.m.
Your prayers of comfort and peace for the family are requested.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
