Michael Raymond Huffman
of Chandler, AZ and formerly of Morton, IL passed away on October 20, 2021, at the age of 67.
Mike was born to parents Ray and Doris Huffman in Peoria, IL on March 24, 1954. He was the oldest of three children, lived and attended school in Morton, IL, and graduated from high school in Oswego, IL in 1972.
Mike’s lifelong career as an engineering draftsman led him from his start at Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria to opportunities in Cedar Rapids, IA; Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Pontiac, IL and back to Peoria with Caterpillar. His work accolades included receiving recognition for a patented design. He retired from Caterpillar in 2017 and returned to Phoenix to live.
Mike had an unflagging sense of adventure and had a wide variety of personal interests. In school, he was a top athlete in track (holding several long-standing records) football, basketball, and golf. As an adult, he became an avid skier, tennis player, and golfer. Mike loved rock and roll music. He played guitar and bass in several bands in his youth and would often be heard humming a bass line from a favorite tune around the house. Fast cars and jeeps were always present in his life. Mike spent several years in Illinois on the drag racing circuit and off-roading with his Big Horn Jeep Club in Colorado. Mike was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. Win or lose, he loved attending games, keeping stats, and watching them on tv.
Mike was a loving son and a loyal brother and friend. Under his rough exterior, all who met him found a heart of gold. He was truly the eternal optimist who was always looking for a way to bring people together, whether for a cup of coffee, a concert, or a full-blown party.
Mike is survived by a sister, Jana Gutenson of Chandler, AZ; brother James Huffman of Peoria, IL; four nephews Van (Katie) Gutenson, Zach (Kelsey) Gutenson, Derek Gutenson, and Nick (Cassie) Gutenson. He was “Grunkle Mikey” (great uncle) to Elanor and Kaycee Jean. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Doris Huffman.
