Melvin’s life is a

LOVE

story. Mel was born in Illinois on September 18, 1926, as an only child to Albert and Carrie Hoerner. His

LOVE

of country prompted him to join the navy at 17 years old. He wanted to “see the world” and his naval journey took him to Japan. After the war, Mel returned to Mendota and found Jane (Henkel), “the

LOVE

of his life!!” Mel and Jane were married on October 21, 1950. Gayle Marie was born in 1951 and Terrence Lee two years later. Mel’s

LOVE

of ownership led him to open his own business in Mendota – Mel’s Ideal Market. His

LOVE

of adventure called him to move his young family west to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1959.

Mel continued to work in the food industry in sales and management. He enjoyed meeting people, had a great sense of humor and made friends easily. When he retired, Mel’s

LOVE

of golf inspired him to build a new home on the 18th tee box in Sun Lakes. Mel and Jane have lived there since 1995, where they have celebrated 67 years of wedding happiness.

Mel was a lifetime member of the ELKS Club. He

LOVE

d fishing, camping and family bar-b-ques. He

LOVE

d sports especially coaching and watching Terry play Little League baseball, basketball and football at Brophy Prep, and football at Northern Arizona University. Mel was a season ticket holder of ASU football for over 20 years. His

LOVE

of basketball led him to be an avid Phoenix Suns fan!! Mel

LOVE

d golfing in the Men’s and Couple’s Leagues of the Palo Verde Country Club. Mel’s

LOVE

of travel took him to Hawaii, St. Martin, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Mazatlán, Cozumel and cruising to Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Mel will be missed by family and friends, but never forgotten.

Mel’s

LOVE

of God was the cornerstone of his life and spirit.

Mel’s

LOVE

story will continue to live in our hearts forever.

Mel is survived by his loving wife Jane, daughter Gayle (Jack), son Terry (Lauri): Granddaughters Courtney, Kylee (Joshua), Stacy (Kevin), and Katie: Great Grandson Jase, and Great Granddaughters Adalyn and Kadyn.
