Born February 23, 1987
Matthew William Nelson
was thirty-four years old when he passed into the next life in early August 2021 and reunited with his earthly and Heavenly fathers, beginning the next phase of his learning, growth, and progression.
One thing we will always associate with Matthew is his deep love of fishing from a very early age. His father taught him how to fish and that love of fishing stuck with him over the years. One beautiful summer day at Eldorado Park Matt caught enough sunfish to layer a gallon bucket full! Interestingly, out of all the other people that day this little 5-year old boy was the only one catching anything. Soon a crowd had gathered watching this little boy bait the hook, cast the line, and within just a few minutes reel in another fish! Even when he was 13 years old a journal entry by Matthew dated March 9th, 2000 reads
“
Dad, Alex, and me went fishing today. It was fun. I caught a fish (Rainbow Trout).
”
Matthew always had an affinity for animals. He seemed drawn to them and they to him. He bonded with hamsters, mice, snakes, kittens, dogs, and even chicken, geese, monkeys and elephants (when the family lived in Burma!)

called him the
“
Baby Whisperer
”
. While in church if a baby was fussy, they just handed the child to Matthew. He would cuddle
the baby and they would just stare into his blue eyes
and the calm
would
t
ake them
over.
This love for little ones also carried over into how he treated his little nephews, nieces, and cousins.

ne time in the car, his younger brother Robert was terribly car sick and
got sick
ALL over Mat

hew. Matt just kept patting him on the back telling him it would all be alright.
And, e
ven though Rob remembers this, one of his best memories is Matthew telling Rob to ask for a skateboard for Christmas. They would go to

urfer
to
get stuff for their boards. We all held our breath when Matt would take
little
Rob skate
–
boarding at Eldorado Park;
and, of course,
they were always late coming home!
Matthew spent many years looking forward to the next run at the skate park.

s mother and father have kept files stuffed full of certificates and recognitions of Matthew

s accomplishments over the years. Academic recognitions, Boy Scout awards and merit badges

These certificates and awards are evidence that even though academics did not come easy to him, he kept working and learning and growing. These records remind us to face the challenges which we all have from birth with determination and bravery.
Matthew traveled the world with his family and met people from all different countries, cultures, and walks of life.

family was in South East Asia for many years,
Matthew had picked up several little
Mandarin
Chinese phrases that he knew well
. It was pretty funny to see how
Chinese-speakers would react to
hearing a
little
red
–
headed
boy speaking
their native tongue
.
Matthew
’
s loves and interests remind us of the Savior of the World
—
He to Whom we rely on and look to until we see Matthew again. The same Savior who walked alongside and loved fishermen; the Creator of the beauty of the outdoors and complexity of each creature and animal; the same Savior that loved each little child; the same Savior who understands perfectly each person
’
s language, background, and challenges. We are comforted that Matthew is reunited with his Heavenly Brother and His Infinite Love. While we wait for the time of our reuniting our minds and hearts come back to the hope in these words:
“…
the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ. He is the light and life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.
”
(Mosiah 16:8)
Matthew is survived by his mother Lorita and brothers Michael, Peter, Alex, and Robert.
