Mary Jean Clinch

April 26, 1930 – November 4, 2017

Mary Jean Clinch, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Saturday, November 4, 2017 in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Jean was born April 26, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Catherine Wahlstrom.

Jean was raised in the neighborhood of Holy Name Parish in Omaha, Nebraska, where she attended the parochial elementary and high school. Jean then enrolled in the Med-Tech program at Creighton University. It was there that she met many of her dearest, lifelong friends. While finishing up her schooling, O’Neil Joseph Clinch (O.J.), a young Navy veteran and dental college student, crossed her path. It was the beginning of a lasting love. They were married on December 27th, 1952. They moved to Belle Fourche, South Dakota, followed by Lincoln, Nebraska, before settling in Chandler, Arizona.

Raising her nine children and caring for O.J. was more than a full-time job, but even when the children were young, she managed to attend an occasional oil painting class. Her interest in painting remained with her all her life, and brought her great joy. She and a few of her dear art friends opened Gallery 5, a cooperative art gallery just south of the plaza in Chandler. In addition to painting, another of Jean’s great passions was traveling. She combined those loves by attending painting workshops in Tahiti, Monet’s Garden, her beloved California and many places in between.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. O’Neil Joseph Clinch of Sun Lakes; her only sibling, Barb Smejkal (& Bob, Kathy, Suzie) of Omaha, Nebraska; children: daughter Sharon Kay Allred of Gilbert, son Kevin Donald Clinch (& Kathy) of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, daughter Maureen Michelle Feuz (& Pete) of Wilson, Wyoming, daughter Patricia Colleen York (& Rusty) of Chandler, son Neil Dennis Clinch (& Peg) of Linthicum, Maryland, son Brian Gerard Clinch (& Linda) of Nashville, Tennessee, son Casey Joseph Clinch (& Cheryl) of Frisco, Texas, daughter Teresa Jean Clinch (& Don) of Phoenix and son Jed Michael Carl Clinch (& Mary) of Youngstown, New York; three nieces, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, November 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Steven’s Catholic Church in Sun Lakes. The family will receive friends at the Oakwood Country Club clubhouse in Sun Lakes following the mass.
