Joseph Agnello

Joseph Agnello

, age 84, passed away surrounded by family at his home in San Tan Valley, Arizona on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.  Joe was born on July 15, 1935 to Angelo and Lena (Abramo) Agnello.  He was raised with his five sisters in Brooklyn, NY.  He joined the navy at the age of 17 and served for four years as a Sonar Technician, stationed aboard the USS Basilone, where he spent much of his time pinging whales.  His time in the navy afforded him the privilege of traveling the world.  Joe was a jazz aficionado, and much of his off time was spent attending performances by jazz greats.  He boasted having spent a night at a bar with saxophonist Stan Getz, as well as having dined with Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.  After his honorable discharge, he completed his college education at Hofstra University, majoring in Chemistry, a subject in which he promptly lost interest upon graduation.  Joe never settled into any one field but worked hard his entire working life.  Though he was a quiet man, he loved to make people laugh and was known for his story-telling capabilities; he could keep an audience riveted with stories of growing up on the streets of Brooklyn, close encounters with the mob, and navy exploits (to name a few), even after they’d heard the story about 1,000 times before.  Joe adored watching sports – pretty much any and all sports were fair game on his television.  There’s a good chance he’d have watched paint dry on TV if it was billed as “Competitive Paint Evaporation.” Befitting his Italian heritage, he was quick to issue the words, “I love you,” and was always ready to offer up a hug or kiss to his loved ones.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Angelo, his mother, Lena, and his sister, Fran.  He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, his seven children, Joseph, Thomas, Nancy, Deborah, Cynthia, Keith, and Mickaella, his sisters, and an abundance of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on October 14, 2019 at 1:30pm in the clubhouse of Los Hermanos Mobile Home Park, 654 E. Ranch Rd, San Tan Valley, AZ. Donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America, PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901.
