, age 81, died Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at his home in Mesa, Arizona, after battling cancer for 3 years.

Joe was born on May 20, 1938, in Mesa, Arizona to Thomas and Marva Andersen.  He was the fifth of their ten children.

Joe farmed wheat and alfalfa with his Dad on their farm in Chandler, Arizona. He lettered in basketball, baseball, and tennis at Chandler High School, graduating in 1956.

From 1958 to 1960, Joe served a mission to Guatemala for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This led to a life-long love for the people and history of Meso-America.

Joe graduated from ASU law school in 1970 and practiced law in Chandler until 1984, when he sold his practice and created a large pistachio farm northwest of Wickenburg, Arizona.

He married LueDean Hills on September 4, 1963. Together they raised ten children.  They have 43 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. One of the highlights of their life together was the mission they served together at the Family History Mission in Salt Lake City in 2013.

LueDean passed away on July 24, 2018.

Joe was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served in a number of leadership and scouting positions, influencing the lives of many young men for good.

His family said of him, ”We love his energetic nature, kind heart, common sense, and the way he can tell us like it is.  We deeply miss him.”

His children (and spouses) are Vance (Allyson Walters),

Marva Lynn (David Bear), Rob (Tori Spratling), John (Magaly Quintero), Ann, Tom (Darcy Carr), Jeff (Brooke Allred), Stephanie (Alan Underwood), Kathryn (Boyd Newsom), and Michelle (Dave Smyth).

Joe’s surviving siblings are Vonda (Orval Skousen), Darlene, Jeep (Pat), Marilyn (Jim Freeman), Tommie Sue (Craig Wright).

Services will be held this Saturday August 24th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints building at 2339 South Crismon Road, Mesa, AZ.  The viewing is from 2-3:30 P.M. The Funeral is at 4 P.M. The interment will take place on Monday, August 26th at 10 am at Double Butte Cemetery in Tempe, Arizona.
