Jerry Freeman Lewis

Born: August 7, 1937

Died: August 23, 2021

Jerry was the son of Woodrow and Jewel Lewis. He was a native Arizonian and lifelong resident of the Ocotillo and Chandler area.  He graduated from Chandler High School in 1955.  After some study of agriculture at Arizona State College, he started his farming career working on the family cotton farm which was 4 sections/4 square miles of land that is now the Sun Lakes Golf Course south of Ocotillo.  Growing up on the farm as a child was one of the highlights of his life. He often shared those stories with his children and wanted them to have their own stories to tell. He had memorized the farm’s complete legal land description, practically every square foot. His instructions for the day would sound something like this: cultivate 9 on 32, move the pipe from 6 on 29 to 2 on 30, and set check tarps on 4 on 31 for water from 12 am to 6 pm . . .  He took pride in the quality of the crops as well as the farm’s appearance. When the irrigation, fertilization, and cultivation were completed it was time to clean the ditch banks, chop the weeds, disc the borders, and then park all the equipment in their designated locations on the ranch. He loved farming.

Jerry enjoyed exercising at the gym but he loved the game of golf. The golf course was a special place for him. Respect for the game and its rules and etiquette was paramount. He was in constant search of the perfect drive and accurate putt. He could be seen swinging a golf club on his front lawn and even while out on the farm. He had sharpened the leading edge of a 9 iron converting the golf club into a tool to chop the weeds on the ditch bank, when a connection was made the vegetation would fly up end over end like a golf ball out of the sand trap. When not possible for him to play the game properly, he was not going to play.  Many stories have circulated over the years about Jerry getting frustrated with his game.  It is said he would excuse himself from the fairway and return a few minutes later with a club in need of a new shaft. He had a great swing and has many hole-in-ones to his credit.

Jerry loved spending summers at their beautiful cabin in the cool pines of Overgaard, it was a special place. He said that he would have loved to live to be 150 years old but was grateful for the life he had. He felt each day was valuable and worthy of being recorded, so he did since age 16.

Jerry is survived by his wife Martha and his children Tracy Lewis, Hal Lewis, Jeff Lewis, and Julie Lewis. Lynn Lewis his eldest son is deceased. He has 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren,

and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
