James George Smith, Iii, Md

James George Smith, III, MD

On December 8, 2022, Jim was reunited with his eternal companion, Lola.  Jim was born in Teton, Idaho on August 16, 1928 to James G Smith, Jr and Ada Irene Nichols and had 7 siblings.  He was the last of the Smith siblings as all had previously passed.

Jim was a well-respected and loved father to Lynda Barnes (John), James George Smith, IV (who died as an infant) and Matthew John Smith (Pamela).  James had 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren with 3 more on the way.  The family was fortunate to have multiple 5 Generation photos with Jim and his posterity.  Jim always did his best to attend each of his children and grandchildren’s important events including graduations, baptisms, weddings, etc.

Jim was a highly respected OB-GYN physician having trained at the University of Utah School of Medicine and practiced in the town where he grew up, Logan, UT, but spent the majority of his medical practice at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo, CA where he was the OB-GYN Chief of Staff.  He has estimated that he delivered more than 10,000 babies.  He was loved by his many patients and described as a very compassionate doctor with a loving bedside manner.

He faithfully served in many callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including Bishop’s Counselor multiple times, Bishop, High Counselor, Stake Mission President, Counselor to Stake President, Stake Patriarch.  Along with Lola, Jim served for almost 2 years as the Mission Doctor for all the missionaries in Chile.  Some of his favorite memories involved the various outings and adventures with the young men to places like Baja California, Wyoming, rafting the Colorado and even just Scout Camp.  Jim served in the National Guard while completing his residency.

Jim was an avid sports enthusiast who loved watching his favorite teams but was always conflicted when University of Utah played BYU.  He loved golf and played 3-4 times a week when he was retired.  In his younger days he was a fast-pitch softball pitcher sometimes pitching both games of a double header.

Jim will be missed by all who knew him, those he touched in the many ways and especially his family.  We all know that he has had a wonderful reunion in Heaven with his loving wife, son, parents and siblings.

Jim will be laid to rest on December 30th in the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Utah next to his beloved eternal companion, Lola.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 16, 2022, 6-8pm
