Edward “Ed” Starrett

Edward “Ed” Starrett

was born May 18, 1939, in Palo Alto, CA, and was the oldest of 4 children. Ed grew up in Palo Alto with his mom, dad, his two brothers, and a sister. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy in 1957 and was stationed in Long Beach, CA.  He later traveled the Pacific Rim on the USS E.G. Small for four years touring places such as Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and Hong Kong. After his years of service, he returned to California to begin an apprentice as a meat cutter. He worked in this industry for many years for various small family-owned meat stores as well as large grocery chains. He had a passion for his work and enjoyed making customers happy with the finest cuts of meat.

Ed met Dianne “Dee” Darras in San Mateo, CA and they were married within months. They recently celebrated their 56

th

wedding anniversary, so it truly was love at first sight. Ed and Dee had two boys, John and David. They spent 34 years in Oregon prior to moving to Arizona to be closer to family.

When Ed retired from the meat business, he continued working as a custodian while in Oregon and in Arizona.  Ed had a passion for his work no matter what he was doing. After hearing that a little boy had lost his retainer, Ed spent hours looking through trash and was able to find it.  He always went above and beyond helping others.

Ed was also a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, which is the highest and most prestigious degree.  He especially enjoyed serving at the weekly fish fry every Friday night for many years.  He also became a full-time grandpa to Savana, Ian, and McKenna after his retirement.  Grandpa Ed was special! He was a grandfather to many children, not just his own. Grandpa Ed read weekly to the class at preschool and helped with class parties.  He also assisted with the running club when the kids moved on to elementary school.  Ed never missed the kids’ sporting events.  Ed was very active until the end. He was golfing on his 80

th

birthday.

Ed was diagnosed with lung cancer in October of 2020. He lived the last year with a positive attitude and a strong relationship with his Lord Jesus Christ.

Ed leaves behind his wife Dee, son David Starrett (Monica) of Phoenix, AZ; his 3 grandchildren Savana, Ian, and McKenna; his brother Dick Starrett (Pat) of Mountain View, CA; his sister Elaine Starrett of Palm Springs, CA; several in-laws and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, John Starrett, his parents, Russell, and Dorothy, and his brother Danny Starrett.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chandler, Arizona on November 4, 2021, at 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Ed Starrett’s honor to the Knights of Columbus Council #3121, 644 E. Chandler Blvd, Chandler, AZ 85225, attn: Ralph Mondibles.
