Wayne Miller

Bert Wayne Miller

, loving husband, father, grandpa, uncle, and friend was welcomed home on June 26, 2017.

He was surrounded by several members of his family as he peacefully and gracefully returned home to his Heavenly Father.

We know that our Father in Heaven was fully satisfied with his work and contributions here on earth and was ready for him to come home.

A true California boy, Wayne was born in Alhambra, California just outside of Los Angeles.

He lived in San Diego as a young child and moved to Sacramento for his teenage years where he had several life-long friends that he adored, visited, and talked about up to the day of his death.

He had a love affair with the ski slopes at a young age. He worked a paper route to save enough money to go skiing with his two older brothers and you would often find him on the ski slopes of Lake Tahoe.

They were die hards – coming from very little, they shared a sweater and each took turns going down the mountain wearing it to keep warm.

They would sleep in a Volkswagen Bug and get just enough sleep to ski again the next day.

He loved skiing and he loved the gospel – but when given the choice of training for the US Ski Team or serving an LDS Mission, his love for the gospel won and he served a 3 year mission for the church in Lima, Peru where he introduced and baptized over 65 people.

Upon his return from his mission he graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Civil Engineering and met his eternal companion, his sweetheart, and his doll – Patricia Purdon.

They were married in the Salt Lake Temple and together shared a beautiful life with their 6 children and countless grandchildren.

He worked as a civil engineer for Bechtel and Jacobs Engineering for a majority of his career building power plants, water treatment plants, shopping malls, Disneyland rides, and oversaw several environmental cleanup projects and building inspections.

His career took him all around the country and the world – forcing him to call several places home.

He worked hard for his family – never once complaining about his long drives in traffic or time spent away from the comfort of his home to provide dinner on the table for his family.

His love of the gospel and temple was apparent in all aspects of his life.

He selflessly devoted his service to countless callings in the church – whether it be serving in the bishopric, scouts, young mens, priesthood, nursery, teaching youth in the local prison, or simply helping out his neighbor. His testimony of the gospel never wavered.

He wanted to share its goodness with everyone around him.

He and his sweetheart served a 3 year mission during the construction of the Gilbert, AZ temple where they put together a visitor’s center to educate the countless visitors that would stop by and ask questions or want to see the house of the Lord. He could tell you every last detail to that building and was so excited to tell everyone about it.

It will always be a special place because of his hand in its construction.

He was a jack of all trades and knew how to do and fix everything.

He was our favorite mechanic, construction worker, plumber, electrician, landscaper, pool guy, boat driver, snow skier, swim coach, and chef.

He was most proud of his family and the legacy he would be leaving behind.

He made the world a better place, and we are all better for having known such a beautiful, kind, and selfless soul.
