Ronald James McLean
October 9, 1926 to December 4, 2017
Ronald James McLean passed away on December 4, 2017, in Chandler, AZ at the age of 91. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and eventually moved to Tucson, AZ after marriage to Florence McLean where he raised his family, attended the University of Arizona, pursued a career in mechanical engineering, and made many life-long friendships. Motivated by his passion for working in areas of research, Ron followed a career path that included experiences at the Steward Observatory, the University of Arizona Physics Department, and eventually to the National Optical Astronomy Observatory on Kitt Peak. Ron was well known for his “green thumb” in the garden where he produced many ribbon-winning roses. He and Florence loved to travel the world together in their later years. His family will fondly remember the many life stories he would share along with his sense of humor. Ron was preceded in his death by his wife, Florence, daughter Jacquelyn Simmons (McLean), son-in-law Kirk Simmons, father James McLean, and mother Elsie McLean. He is survived by his son Thomas McLean (Jeannine) eight grandchildren: Michele, Kenny (Carolyn), Michael (Genevieve), Marianna (Jamie), Meghan (Trenton), Melissa-Rose (Cameron), Monica, and Melinda (Jake); and ten great- grandchildren. Ron was dearly loved and will be truly missed by all. Memories of him will live in our hearts forever as our family grows.
A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated in honor of Ron at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Chandler, AZ, on January 12, 2018 at 10am.
