Lisa Shannon Hurst
From everyone who knows Lisa, the first words out of their mouths are almost always, “She is the most compassionate human being I’ve ever known.” In our little family, when we cried, she cried with us. When we hurt, she held us. When we were happy, she celebrated. When we were together, she rejoiced. Her compassion spread far beyond her family. Lisa freely and constantly offered kindness, love and compassion to everyone she met. And her compassion didn’t stop with humans. Lisa was amazingly kind-hearted and compassionate toward animals, especially rescues. She vowed never to be without at least two rescued dachsies. Born in Atlanta, Lisa was the quintessential Georgia Peach. She prided herself on being one of the genuine GRITS: Girls Raised in the South. When our boys would have their high school friends over, Lisa would sneak the girls back to her closet to talk about jewelry, makeup, Southern charm, and the art of being a Southern Belle. Few people knew the pain Lisa endured in the last few years of her life. It never slowed her down, and if something needed doing, it got done, no matter what it took. Whether it was physical pain, emotional pain, or just “life happens” situations, her standard response was, “It’s okay. We’ll get through this. Don’t worry.” And she was always right. Lisa believed with all her heart in a loving God and the saving grace of faith in Jesus. When hard times struck, Lisa’s standard response was, “God has a purpose in this…” We know God had a purpose in taking her away from us far too soon, but we miss hearing her say, “It’s going to be alright. We’re in God’s hands.” In lieu of flowers, David and the boys (Logan and David Alexander) have asked that you consider making a donation to one of the following charities on Lisa’s behalf: The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (
