John “Ducky” Mcavoy

PHOENIX – John “Ducky” McAvoy died peacefully in his sleep on September 6, 2018. He was 72 years old. John was born on May 20, 1946 in Miami, Florida to Kathryn and John McAvoy Sr. He is survived by his wife Kathy of sixteen years, as well as their children Kira and Arik. He was predeceased by his former wife Shelley, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1999. He is survived by their children Kimmy Mento (Chicago, IL) and David (Michigan). He is also survived by his uncle Marvin Robertson and sister Ellen McAvoy (both of Roseville, MI) as well as by his aunt Jeannie Swan (Coral Gables, FL).

John is a Vietnam War veteran who was drafted at the age of nineteen and spent nearly two years in-country. Once stateside, John worked in the manufacturing industry in Human Resources for over 40 years, primarily for Cooper Tools (North Carolina), Wellman Friction Products (Cleveland, Ohio), Belden Corp. (Phoenix, AZ) and ME Global (Phoenix, AZ).

John enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially baseball, football and golf. Thanks to the recent World Cup, he cultivated an appreciation for soccer during his final year. John dearly loved horse racing (“the ponies” as he called it) and he adored Las Vegas where he could play Blackjack around the clock if he so desired. He was a fine cook in his younger years, and an avid reader of mysteries. He was a kind and loving husband, father and friend, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
