died November 18, 2017 at her home in Chandler, AZ.
She was born on March 18, 1922 in Hartford, Wisconsin; the youngest of 4 children to Hubert and Meta (Horst) Pribnow. She attended Hartford High School and graduated with the Class of 1940. Hazel was employed as a secretary for the Natural Casing Co. During WWII she worked for Badger Engraving Co, engraving gun sights.
On September 27, 1947 she married Franklin E. Thurow. Hazel and Frank were devoted to each other and shared many common interests, including a passion for dancing, social gatherings, the outdoors, travel, and their faith in God. Together they created a loving home on Taft Road near Neosho, Wisconsin and raised two children, Rene’ and Russell.
Hazel loved being a wife, mother, neighbor, and friend and was an extraordinary homemaker. She excelled at gardening and her annual vegetable and flower gardens were beautiful, diverse, and abundant. She also maintained a large and luscious strawberry bed and several fruit trees. She especially enjoyed lilacs, peonies, irises and tiger lilies. She preserved wonderful canned goods ranging from corn relish to beets to beans to strawberry jam. “Slippery Jims” were a particular family favorite. Her family and friends were treated to delicious pies, cookies and baked goods whenever they visited. She loved birds and her feeders drew a wonderful diversity of cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, grosbeaks, juncos, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and orioles. Hazel was a remarkable woman, with a kind and gentle soul who loved to laugh and excelled at whatever she set her mind to. In addition to canning and baking, she made fantastic dandelion wine and was exceptionally skilled with needlework, sewing, knitting, quilting, and ceramics. Over the course of her lifetime, she gave her wonderful creations to a large group of family, friends, and even new acquaintances.
In 1969 she resumed her career and became the secretary of Neosho Elementary School, a position she held until 1987. Hazel remained in the family home for many years after Franklin’s death and in 1997, moved to Phoenix, AZ. Hazel very much enjoyed her years in AZ, particularly the community of Orangewood Village. After a diagnosis of osteoporosis she began an ambitious fitness and walking regime, walking 5 miles per day well into her 80s. Her son observed that she could still outwalk most of his friends.
Hazel is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Franklin, as well as her dear sister Viola and brothers, Clarence and Arnold. She is survived by her daughter Rene’ (Tom) Bryant of Chandler, AZ , son Russ Thurow and adored granddaughter, Mycellia Cole-Thurow . She is also survived by her cherished niece, Kathryn Swartz, her nephew Ken Krebs, and their families.
A Memorial service is planned, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:30 PM at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Chandler, AZ. Interment will be at Glenview Memorial Gardens, Xiona, WI. The family wishes to thank the staff, and especially the personal caregivers, at Solterra Senior Living for their kindness, care, and affection for Hazel. Grateful thanks also to SunCrest Hospice for the comfort they proved during her final days.
