died on May 27, 2017 at Honor Health Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Grace was born in Davao, Philippines on June 18, 1949 to parents Fernando Gaston and Emperatriz Medina Gaston and was one of six children. She attended high school at Sta. Teresita’s Academy in Silay City then attended Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan in Cagayan de Oro where she received a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Economics in 1969. Grace employed her professional talents in a variety of positions over the years. Her first job was with Bank of the Philippine Islands in Cagayan de Oro and later moved to Makati City for the same bank. She immigrated to the US in June 1980. She worked at Marvel Comics in New York in the office of Public Relations. She also worked as a consultant for Bristol Myers in charge of special events including the annual Cancer and other awards. Grace met Dr. Gerardo Sabal Jr. in a gathering of Filipino-Americans from Cagayan de Oro in 1991. They were married in Arizona on September 26, 1992. They settled in Chandler, Arizona where she continued to commute to New York for her work with Bristol Myers. Grace loved and lived for her family. She was chef de cuisine at reunions and gatherings, was the travel agent and tour guide extraordinaire at vacations, and the number one fan and cheerleader at her grandchildren’s sporting events and performances. Grace was a devout Catholic. She was a regular churchgoer and was involved in various charities most notably St. Vincent de Paul Society. Grace is preceded in death by her father Fernando Gaston. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Gerardo Sabal Jr., her stepchildren Sheryl Papadopoulos, Rochelle Ryan, Archibald Sabal and Wendell Sabal; her mother Emperatriz Gaston, her sisters Daisy Johns and Ma, Theresa Tañedo and her brothers Dennis Gaston, Segundo Gaston, and Cliff Anthony Gaston. Visitation will be Monday June 5, 2017 at 6 pm with a Rosary at 7 pm at Bueler Chandler Mortuary at 14 W Hulet Dr., Chandler AZ. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Tuesday June 6,2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church at 230 W Galveston St. Chandler AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grace’s favorite charities: the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan.
