Gaylord Newell Pierce

, 84, of Tempe, Arizona passed away at home on November 13, 2019 after a valiant struggle with liver and bone marrow cancer.  Although we are heartbroken that he is no longer with us, we are rejoicing in the knowledge that he is enjoying a reunion with loved ones.

Gaylord was born on November 3, 1935 in Tucson, Arizona to Leslie Newell Pierce and Frances Mary Babcock.  He attended school at Phoenix Technical Tech for two years and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1954.  Gaylord spent two and a half years serving a Spanish speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay, South America.  Gaylord was a reservist in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965. Later he spent 40 years working as an insurance agent selling for various insurance agencies.  Upon retirement, Gaylord found employment with Costco in Tempe and has worked there for the last 20 years. Gaylord found great joy in his family and friends and has been grateful for the love and support shown by many.

Gaylord married his first wife Floydell Riley April 15, 1960 in the Mesa Arizona Temple.  They lived in Tempe and raised three children. Floydell passed away in December of 1994. Gaylord married Margaret Scoville on April 8, 1995 in Gilbert, Arizona and they were sealed in the Mesa Temple on April 20, 1996.  They resided in the Tempe area.

A memorial will be held in Gaylord’s honor on December 14, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6001 S. Lakeshore Dr., Tempe, AZ  85283. Gaylord brought a great light to all who knew him. The family feels that paying forward this light, in his honor, would be an act of kindness that Gaylord would be grateful for.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to #LightTheWorld (
