Gayla Carter Patterson

Gayla Carter Patterson

passed away in her home on September 3, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born February 1, 1927 in a log cabin in Park Valley, Utah to Gordon and Eldore Carter. She grew up working on a farm. In her youth, her home had no indoor plumbing, no running water, no electricity, and heat was provided by a pot-belly, coal-burning stove. She was of a generation who worked physically hard from sun-up to sun-down. She was taught by her dear mother: “Fix it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”

Gayla was very creative; she could make something beautiful from anything. She painted beautifully. She kept a beautifully manicured yard. She was a cosmetologist by trade and she also worked in the Utah school lunch program for many years. She was an unassuming, kind-hearted, humorous, generous-of-spirit woman. She loved children and children loved her.

Gayla and Ray Patterson were married on December 26, 1945. Their marriage was solemnized in the LDS Temple Mesa, Arizona on November 24, 1996. This year, 2020, would have been their 75th wedding anniversary. Gayla is survived by sons, Rex (Kathy), Rand (Lynette), Wade, and by seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and preceded in death by one grandson. There was never a better grandmother to her grandchildren.

Four of Gayla’s six siblings preceded her in death; the two surviving are David Carter, Kimber Idaho, and Jeannie Fiddler, SLC, Utah.

Memorial services will be held at Bueler Chandler Mortuary, 14 W. Hulet Drive, Chandler, AZ 85225. Viewing will be Tuesday, September 8, 5:00-7:00 PM. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, September 9, 10:00AM. Interment in the City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center Street, Mesa AZ, 85201.
