Frank Sumsion Jr.

Frank Sumsion Jr.

, of Gilbert, Arizona, and Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away May 6, 2018, after an 18-month battle with myelodysplastic syndrome and acute leukemia. Frank was born in Springville, Utah, on October 26, 1937, the eldest son of Fred F. Sr. and Margaret Thomas Sumsion. He married Earla Gay Butler on September 17, 1960, and they were sealed in the LDS Manti Temple on August 24, 1962. Gay passed away on January 28, 2009. Happily, Frank was not destined to be alone. He married Patricia Ann Bennion on March 20, 2010, and they were sealed in the LDS Gilbert Arizona Temple on November 28, 2014.

Frank graduated from Provo High School and the University of Utah, after which he spent most of his career in hospital laboratory equipment sales. After high school and during the early years of his career, Frank served proudly in the Naval Reserve. He also loved serving in the LDS Church in many capacities, including as bishop of wards in California and Arizona. Frank liked people, and people liked him back. Frank made friends wherever he went, and many of those friends became like family. Besides his family, one of Frank’s greatest loves was fishing, and his favorite place to be was on Fish Lake in central Utah, making sure the next generation knew the secrets of hooking a keeper.

Frank is survived by his wife, Pat; his children Sherry (Mark) Chadwick, Debra (Paul) White, Christine Yellowhorse, Laura (Jacob) Rawlins, Michael Sumsion, and Diana (Kyle) Dana; 17 grandchildren and grandchildren-in-law; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings Ann Sumsion, Ernie (Terry) Sumsion, and Mark (Jan) Sumsion; and brother-in-law, Jim Westover. He was preceded in death by his wife Gay; his parents, Fred and Margaret; and his sister Madeline Westover.

A viewing will be held Monday, May 14, 2018, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the LDS stake center at 1115 E. Ray Road in Chandler (southeast corner of Ray and McQueen). The funeral service will follow, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Friends may call in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 10:00 am until noon at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., followed at 1:00 p.m. by a graveside service and interment at Springville Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the LDS Humanitarian Aid Fund.
