Carl Joseph Chavez Jr.

On Saturday, January 18, 2020 Carl Joseph Chavez Junior succumbed to complications after a minor surgical procedure. He is survived by his sister Carol Chavez, devoted wife of 47 years Donna (nee Smokvina) Chavez, two loving sons Carl Joseph Chavez III (Joe) and Andy Chavez, daughters-in-law, Brook Jadczak, Tiffany (nee Lloyd) Chavez and two grandchildren Milo and Aris, plus niece Raeann (nee Shroyer) Fuller and her husband, Jim Fuller.

Carl was born on March 6th, 1943 in Salem Oregon and grew up in Chicago with his sister Carol, mother (Virginia) and father (Carl Sr.).

Carl and Donna first met as Carl was leaving to serve in the US Army during the Vietnam War. It was more than a decade later that they reconnected, fell in love and married in under a year.

Carl was a devoted father and husband. For 47 years of marriage he worked tirelessly to provide for his family even through an unexpected layoff, returning to school, a career change and a transfer from Illinois to Arizona. His hard work gave Donna the opportunity to be a stayat-home mom while they raised their two sons and provided Joe and Andy a solid foundation to build their lives.

Shortly after retirement he faced numerous health challenges but remained stoic. He lived and fought to be by Donna’s side and a part of the family that cherished every moment with him.

His passion for photography and music along with his unique sense of humor and attention to detail are only a few of the many unforgettable personality traits that will live on through his sons and will invariably be passed down to his grandsons Milo and Aris.

According to Carl’s wishes, in lieu of a wake and funeral the family invites friends to join them in a celebration of his life the first weekend in March. Details to be announced soon.

Please keep our family in your thoughts during this difficult time. Thank you.
